4 stappe hoe om te luister
- Focus on everything the other person is saying at all levels and what is not being said, instead of formulating responses or trying to react.
- Evaluate what is being said, what is being meant and try to understand the full picture of the conversation.
- Asking questions to clarify and make sure you understand the conversation.
- Start to pray, God what is my purpose in this conversation? What is my role? What do you want to achieve in this conversation? What are you busy with in this conversation? Lord what question comes next? etc.
We have been programmed by our Creator to respond to His Voice very differently than we respond to the voices of our fellow human beings. When the voice of one of our fellow men speaks, what it immediately activates are the parts of our brain that were most severely affected by the Fall. What was most severely affected by the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Our powers of reasoning, of processing and evaluating, of analyzing, of prioritizing, of assigning emotion, and of forming opinions. When a human speaker – e.g. Yitro - says something, the parts of our brain that go to work are the least healthy ones. As the affected areas of our brain try to evaluate, analyze, process, organize, prioritize, assign emotion, and form opinions based on the information the human speaker has downloaded, that information is processed through the room-darkening lenses of our selfinterest, our fleshly appetites, our cultural and ideological predispositions, and our default emotions. That is the law of the carnal mind. See Romans 8:7: The carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
Ah, but the process is very, very different when the Voice speaking to us is that of our Creator. Communication from Him is pure, and cannot be corrupted. Hence when we encounter His utterances the fallen components of our brains immediately short-circuit. Instead, the vast reservoir of pre-fall brilliance that generally lies untapped in each of us - hidden behind the veil of the physical and temporal – is immediately awakened and activated. Our hearts and souls begin to vibrate like a tuning fork that has been struck. Our spirits come alive. Our hearts are set atremble, not with human emotion, but with yirat YHVH – the quickening energy of the reverent fear of the Holy One. Wave after wave of wonder and delight wash over our souls. We become alive in a way and begin to resonate with a life force that fallen human intellect can neither access, recognize, or define. We are lulled to sleep when men speak to us; but at the first words of the Voice of our Beloved our hearts awaken with a start2. The Voice of our Bridegroom-King causes our hearts to dance. Wisdom from Heaven causes our minds to focus again on beautiful things, on Kingdom of Heaven priorities, and on eternal realities. A radical transformation process begins. Our awestruck hearts come alive again. Our minds race with inspired dreams and visions. Even our physical bodies receive and infusion of energy. How does the Holy One accomplish this?
